About This Work |
Gyula Konfár, Mihály Schéner: Two Contemporary Hungarian Artists was the only exhibition at Grosvenor Gallery to feature modern Hungarian art exclusively. The presentation of their work in 1964 included 52 paintings in total. One by each of the artists is on view here, the Schéner on this panel and the Konfár to the right. Both had been included in an earlier group exhibition just a few months earlier at the end of 1963, First Image, where they were listed as "artists of the gallery." Both Konfár and Schéner worked in similar dark, expressionistic styles and, according to the exhibition catalogue, enjoyed successful careers in their home country and exhibited internationally. Nonetheless, neither artist ever exceeded moderate successes within Hungary. Eric Estorick framed their work in specific terms. He contextualized Konfár within the late 19th-century Hungarian School, referring to him as "one of the most highly esteemed artists in Hungary." His White Cottages, Red Roofs (1964), on view here, evidences the use of heavy impasto typical of most of his works on board. The Hebrew Home owns three similar landscapes executed in this vein.
