About This Work |
The hamsa - literally five, in Arabic - is a common amulet for protection against the evil eye. In Islam, the hand symbolizes the five pillars, or duties, that define orthodox Islamic belief. However, in Judaism, it also suggests the mighty hand of God intervening on behalf of Israel. A verse from Deuteronomy, which was believed to be effective against fever, is engraved in a magical square on the back of this pendant. Tradition and Remembrance: Treasures of the Derfner Judaica Museum, 2009-ongoing, exhibition label. |
