About This Work |
Printed in Germany by a company based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, this postcard greeting shows a diverse group of Jews on their way into a synagogue while a text in Yiddish above exhorts them to attend services for Rosh Hashanah. There are nine people of varying ages including men, women and children, among them a clean-shaven man and others with beards including a white-haired man wearing a traditional Eastern European-style frock coat. The men and boys carry prayer shawls and some prayer books, which one of the women also holds. The variations in dress and other characteristics suggest different levels of religious observance and acculturation among the group. Williamsburg Post Card Co., New York. Printed in Germany. |
