Gift of Mrs. Sylvia W. Hoffman in memory of her husband, Heinz J. Hoffman who survived the Holocaust |
About This Work |
This 18th-century seder plate was originally thought by the donor to have come into her husband's family's possession after it was looted from a Jewish home during the Holocaust. However, research has since shown that it was in the possession of Heinz Hoffman's relatives for almost 200 years before the Holocaust. An inscription on the plate reads: "This belongs to the prominent man, Wolf, son of Mordechai, and the prominent woman, Meschacha, daughter of Rabbi Eliyahu of Doernbach [now Langendernbach]." German historians Dorothee Lottmann Kaeseler and Gerhard Buch were able to connect Heinz Hoffman's aunt Cilly Hoffman Jochims to the original owners of the plate. This information proved that Mrs. Jochims' husband, Willy, who was not Jewish and was said to have looted objects from Jewish homes possibly to save his Jewish wife, had not looted this particular seder plate.
